Netflix releases trailer for new Roxanne Shanté biopic

By: Erica M. Ponder

Netflix is giving real hip-hop heads the ultimate treat next month!

The popular streaming service is premiering Roxanne, Roxanne, a new biopic based on the life of Queens rap pioneer Lolita Shanté Gooden, also known as Roxanne Shanté.

Scheduled to air March 23, Roxanne, Roxanne is based on the lyricist’s life as a 14-year-old girl growing up in the streets of Queens while trying to battle with an abusive lover, the taste of fame, and outside negative influences throughout her impressionable years.

Played by Chanté Adams and executive produced by the rap legend herself, Roxanne assured viewers that this film is going to be the truth, and nothing but the truth.

“Everything was the truth, so I can’t alter the truth… And whatever happened, what can I do about that? We can’t rewrite history. So, I prefer to see it when everyone else sees it. When people see me at Sundance, the reaction they see that night will be my true reaction,” she said in an interview with Rolling Stone.

The movie is also starring Nia Long as Roxanne’s mother, and Mahershala Ali as her violent boyfriend.
